The Lenten Rose
This intriguing perennial is without a doubt the star of the winter landscape. Hellebores are one of the most resilient and gorgeous perennials that we carry at the garden center. Hellebores, often called the Christmas Rose or Lenten Rose, bloom around the holiday season and into the cold winter.
Some of a hellebores’ best features:
- Evergreen
- Deer Resistant
- Have cue, cup-shaped blooms that can be upright or drooping
- Have dark green, sprawling foliage
- Are available in a variety of colors from white to pastel yellow to pink and purple
Even though this perennial’s magnificent flower only blooms during the colder seasons, throughout the summer it will keep the deep green foliage that creates visual depth and interest in the landscape. Hellebores can be used in containers or flower beds and they enjoy shadier spots in your garden. These beauties can pair well with spring-flowering bulbs, as well as shade-loving perennials like hostas, ferns, and even columbines. They even look great planted beneath a shade tree or mixed with deciduous shrubs and ornamental plants.
Caring for hellebores requires planting in rich, fairly moist soil that drains well. Hellebores do not like to be disturbed or moved, so it’s best to find a good location and plant them permanently in one spot. In the early winter, the older foliage turns brown. When this happens, we recommend simply trimming away the old foliage to keep the plant looking its best.
