Christopher Newport University or CNU, is a four-year, liberal arts college located on a 260-acre campus located in Newport News, Virginia. CNU was originally established in 1961, as a two-year branch of the College of William & Mary and became a full university in 1992. The university is named after Captain Christopher Newport, an English sailor and privateer who captained the largest of the three ships carrying settlers to Jamestown and the Virginia Colony. CNU is home to approximately 5,000 students with academic programs encompassing more than 80 areas of study. CNU is located two and a half hours south of Washington, D.C., and less than an hour from Norfolk, Williamsburg and Virginia Beach - home of some of the nation’s most noteworthy historic sites. The Mariners Museum, one of the world’s largest maritime museums, is also within walking distance from the campus.
