CAPE HATTERAS LIGHTHOUSE

North Carolina

Whether you’re walking on the beach, kayaking on the sound, or surfing the waves, there is something for everyone in Cape Hatteras! Famed for its lighthouse and long sandy beaches, this family-friendly destination is a great place to unwind. The Cape Hatteras lighthouse towers 198 feet above the sea making it the tallest lighthouse in North America and the second tallest brick light tower in the world. The first lighthouse at the Cape was built in 1803, and was replaced by the current beacon in 1870. The lighthouse is comprised of 1,250,000 bricks with an iron infrastructure and has withstood generations of hurricanes. The spiral-designed black and white structure served as a Hatteras landmark and was designed to assist sailors navigating the treacherous Diamond Shoals located just off shore. So many ships have been lost off Cape Hatteras that the area is now known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” Today, visitors can climb its 268 steps for a magnificent view of Hatteras Island and the Atlantic Ocean.

Heirloom Ornaments are limited edition, hand painted keepsakes sold exclusively at McDonald Garden Center. These two-sided ornaments celebrate LOCAL sites & attractions unique to Hampton Roads and surrounding areas.
