Vines add a whole new dimension to your garden from simple foliage varieties to exotic-looking flower bearers that climb and bloom.

They are great for hiding eyesores, providing privacy, and softening the monotony of plain fencing and a great choice in tight spaces since they grow vertically. Most require low maintenance and little space, and often draw the attention of colorful butterflies and delightful little hummingbirds.

Selecting the right vine is a fairly simply process. Simply choose how high and where you want the vine to grow. Flowering vines come in a wide variety of colors, but will range in height from 8 to 40 feet, so ensuring proper space is integral. It is also important to remember that some vines are very aggressive growers and can destroy flimsy trellises and plastic netting. Vines generally require little care, once they are planted. So, the occasional fertilizer and removal of dead growth will help your blooms look beautiful. Our recommendations for vines include:

Annual Vines

Mandevilla is the top pick for an annual vine. Flowers come in red, pink, white and yellow, and we begin to carry in-store at the start of May when temperatures are warmer. This fast grower is great for a mailbox, trellis, or patio by giving gardeners great value and lots of color over a long season.

For a soft and romantic look, Bougainvillea comes in shades of pink, purple, red, and orange and bloom in clusters from summer to fall. This climber enjoys full sun.

The beautiful and mysterious Morning Glory sports a wide range of colors. This vine blooms throughout the summer and grows up to 12 feet. This annual enjoys full sun, but its beautiful blooms open during the cool, early morning hours, and will close during the heat of the day.

Perennial Vines

Clematis is the Queen of the vines, coming in colors of red, pink, purple and white. Most clematis die back in the winter but Clematis Armandii is an evergreen vine with very glossy leaves and fragrant white flowers that appear in early spring.

Woody Vines (Evergreen)

Carolina and Rankinii Jasmine are closely related and look very similar. Both have small yellow flowers, but bloom at different times. Carolina jasmine blooms in early spring and is followed by Rankinii. Rankinii Jasmine will also repeat bloom in the fall. These plants are so similar that they can be planted together to provide a long season of bloom. Flowers have a light fragrance.

Madison Jasmine is an evergreen vine that provides fragrance to the garden. It blooms after the Carolina and Rankinii Jasmine with flowers continuing into summer. The flowers are white and very attractive.
Coral or Goldflame Honeysuckle is another great choice. It benefits from routine pruning. This vine with tubular shaped blooms is great for attracting wildlife to the garden like hummingbirds.

Woody Vines (Deciduous vines)

Climbing Roses are perfect for a trellis or arbor. There are a variety of colors to choose from and some are even fragrant. Many of the newer varieties have improved vigor and health, producing more flowers.

A classic climber, Wisteria, is a vigorous grower. We recommend a selection of the native wisteria called ‘Amethyst Falls’. The native variety is not as aggressive as other varieties, making it easier to keep in bounds.
