Drainage Issues?

We Have Your Solutions…

As this year has proven, April showers may bring more than just May flowers to the Tidewater area. It can mean soggy soil that just never seems to dry out. Standing water around your home’s foundation can lead to major structural problems. Consistently wet soils can suffocate the root systems of turf and shrubs, leading to unappealing landscapes and unusable yard space. Why are drainage problems increasingly common to our area?
How can we solve them?

With the increased demand for housing and expansions of water and sewer lines, once “unsuitable” lots are now becoming new home sites. These smaller sized lots coupled with the topography of our area result in high density living with more run-off water to be diverted.

The landscape specialists at McDonald Garden Center have been successfully solving exterior drainage problems for more than 25 years. These innovative solutions focus on routing water away from structures and erosion-prone areas. This water is collected by down spout extensions, catch basins or channel drains and dispersed safely away from foundations and planting areas (see large diagram).

Surface drains collect standing water in low-lying trouble spots. Channel drains along hard surfaces such as drive or walkways help eliminate water collecting after heavy rain. These drains are tied into an overall drainage plan. Water that would normally discharge from gutter down spouts is now collected through the drainage system and dispersed safely at the street (as seen in inset diagram).

Proper drainage is critical to a successful landscape. To resuscitate your soggy soil and learn more about McDonald Garden Center complete landscape design services call 722-7463 ext. 312 for more information and to schedule an appointment.
