Orchids - A Bloom For Every Room

Onceonly within the reach of the wealthy, today orchids are enjoyed by all. With their beauty and never-ending allure, orchids captivate and fascinate people from all walks of life. If you can grow houseplants you can grow orchids.
The orchid family is the largest plant family. Some orchids produce flowers smaller than a mosquito, others larger than a dinner plate. Orchids also grow on every continent of the world except Antarctica and in every state in this nation. Most orchids are classified as epiphytes or air plants which grow mainly on trees, thus they can thrive in tree bark, crumbled charcoal, pebbles, coconut fiber or cork plaques.

Exotic Star AmaryllisMost Orchids are long lived and bloom from once a year to several times a year. The Phalaenopsis or Moth Orchid, America’s favorite houseplant, blooms for two to three months and is a low light plant.
For slightly higher light, such as east & west windows, Oncidiums are a good choice and can bloom twice a year. For very bright locations, Dendrobiums, Cattleyas and Vandas with their long lasting blooms are the perfect choice.
When caring for your plants, let them dry out between waterings. Overwatering can be fatal to the plant - we recommend watering early in the morning from the top allowing it to drain through and dry completely before you water again. Avoid wetting the flowers. Fertilize with an orchid fertilizer and repot plants once a year. Only go up one pot size, as orchids prefer to be a little crowded.
