Plant of the Week: Lipstick Plant
One of best houseplants for the hanging basket, Aeschynanthus, also known as the Lipstick Plant, is characterized by shiny green foliage and exotic, vivid red, tubular flowers that bloom throughout the year. Aeschynanthus is related to African violets and Cape Primrose. There are several varieties available as houseplants; some are more compact while others have different sized flowers. The one shown in the photo is the Rasta variety. This plant enjoys humidity, so a daily misting helps provide it with the moisture it craves. If the leaves begin to brown and dry out or flowers turn black, the plant is not receiving enough humidity. Aeschynanthus requires regular watering, but be sure not to overwater. This cascading, beauty takes lower light levels and dry conditions with ease. The Lipstick Plant does best when provided with bright, indirect light. It loves heat, and prefers day temperatures of over 75 degrees and nights in the 65- to 70- degree range. In the winter when growth slows a bit, the plant may be kept in a cooler location, but night temperatures should not fall below 55 degrees. Overall, we rate this plant as a pretty low maintenance, easy blooming plant. The drama and color that it adds to a room makes this plant worth its weight in gold! { Happy Holidays! Plant of the Week: Oncidium Orchid
The Oncidium variety of orchids are becoming very popular due to ease of growing and long lasting sprays of small, distinct flowers which often have unique color combinations and a pleasant fragrance. They typically offer stunning blooms once a year and grow very well indoors. These orchids put on quite a show with a seemingly endless array of striking color patterns! Oncidiums are absolutely magnificent in bloom. A large, well-grown plant might send out six or even seven branched sprays of yellow flowers. The effect is very much like a cloud of buttery butterflies. Although Oncidiums are known for their yellow flowers, other varieties are available. The 'O. Sharry Baby' is sometimes called the chocolate orchid for its sprays of brownish flowers with a rich cocoa scent. Sharry Baby is spectacular in its festive splashes of maroon and white and shares a wonderful chocolate scent floating up from dozens of tiny blossoms. The flowers appear to be soft and delicate, but the petals have a firm, almost leathery feel. If you want a real showy flower, you're sure to love this week's Plant of the Week. Enjoy! { Happy Holidays! Posted by McDonald Garden Center, December 21, 2011 }

Plant of the Week: Cyclamen
If you think poinsettias are pretty, but too traditional for holiday decorating, consider the Cyclamen. This cool weather bloomer boasts unusually shaped, colorful blossoms and variegated gray-green elliptical leaves. Depending on the variety, the blossoms may be pink, lavender, deep purple, white, or red. So, a perfect match for Christmas decorating. Cyclamen needs cool temperatures to continue blooming, so be sure to keep this plant away from heat sources and, preferably, in the coolest part of the house. To prolong the life of your plant, water the soil as soon as it feels dry to the touch. Avoid overwatering, and be careful not to spill water onto the crown (center) of the plant. If it becomes too dry, the leaves will wilt and may fall off, and flower buds may fall off too. You can also keep humidity high around plants by placing plants on a tray of moist pebbles; just don't let them sit in standing water. A McDonald watering tip - is to soak the pot from the base, as in a saucer for a few minutes, then drain the water. We recommend removing the flower stalks once they have finished blooming as this can promote renewed flowering. To do this, cut the dead leaves and spent flowers off with scissors. Be sure to remove completely, as stalks left on may rot and get gray mold disease. Celebrate the Poinsettia!
It's December 12th... and that means it's National Poinsettia Day! The Poinsettia is one of the few flowers of North America that can claim its own day thanks to Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first U.S. Ambassador to Mexico. It is Roberts who is credited for bringing this beautiful traditional Christmas gift to our land. And it all happened like this: Ambassador Poinsett was on a diplomatic mission to Taxco, Mexico. The year was 1828. Admiring the tropical environment, he became entranced with the plants beauty, its medicinal uses, and its artistic applications by the natives of the region. So enamored, was the ambassador that it was one of the first things he brought back to the United States. The plant proved to have a major impact on not only Christmas in the USA, but agriculture, for many years to come. Because of its important role in the celebration of Christmas and its beautification to America, Congress set December 12th each year as National Poinsettia Day. The good Ambassador would be amazed at what started as simple cuttings from Mexico have become. According to USDA, poinsettias are the number one potted plant grown in the nation! Poinsettias are easy to keep beautiful and blooming throughout the holidays and beyond as long as you follow a few simple tips:

'Tis the Season for Giving
It's the season for giving and we've got an array of thoughtful & unique gifts for everyone on your list. Some of our favorite gift ideas are handmade sculptures by American Artist & Sculptor, George Carruth. Carruth Studio was born in 1983, in a garage in Cleveland, Ohio. It all started when Artist George Carruth carved a cherub face into a piece of sandstone as a gift for his wife using only a screwdriver. In the beginning, Curruth participated in art festivals and sold his sculptures through galleries. Carruth’s commissions included The National Cathedral in Washington D.C., an ornament for the White House Christmas tree and Home and Garden TV. As time went on, Carruth began smaller and lighter designs. The transition to these smaller cast stone signs provided many new opportunities for displaying these sculptures, since they were light enough to hang on a wall or small enough to place in a windowsill or a special place. For instance, the Veggies Series characters are used as accents in kitchens as well as in the garden. The nativity and Christmas pieces are used on fireplaces and as table accents. These hand cast stone sculptures are the perfect gift for the holidays or any other meaningful occasion. Each design comes in a gift box and is made using quality, weather resistant materials for use both outdoors and indoors. These unique sculptured pieces will add another dimension to home and garden whether they do so by adding something whimsical or by lending an air of formality and elegance. { Happy Holidays!
