In designing the new outdoor space an expansive patio of concentric circles was designed. The curved shape helps lead guests from one entry to another. The new design included changing a small concrete slab at the kitchen door to a generous 90 square foot elevated porch. Geometric shapes of precision cut sandstone were selected for the patio surface. This beautiful stone goes by a variety of names, “Pennsylvania Blue”, “Crab Orchard” or “Colonial Gray”. The colors range from blue-gray, golden tan, to an orange brown depending on the mineral content of each piece. This stone has a natural cleft that provides superior footing. The formality of the pattern adds a touch of elegance to any setting.
After establishing the proper grade for drainage, granite stone dust was added to provide a secure base for the patio stone. Conduit was laid underneath the patio to accommodate low voltage lighting and irrigation. All existing stone was utilized in the project and incorporated with the new stone.
A good pressure washing brightened up the old stone and cleaned away any traces of tidal surge. Blending new and old in a seamless expanse attest to the low maintenance of this beautiful natural stone. Additional stone dust was worked into the narrow margins between each stone providing a smooth consistent surface. Virtually maintenance free, this new patio allows ample space for a dining table and seating, grill island, and portable fire pit.
