Behold the Begonias

...from Hanging Baskets to
containers to garden beds - Begonias Bloom!

At McDonald Garden Center we like to divide the many varieties in the collection into two groups: Winter Flowering and Summer Flowering.

Winter Flowering Begonias are important not just for flowers but also for their spectacular foliage all year long. Some outstanding varieties in this grouping are:

Snoopy; offering---- pale chartreuse leaves in great abundance making it the perfect foil for other plant colors. Try a composition that includes pink caladiums and pink nepthytis blended with anthuriums - a color statement for the shade!

Twisted Sister; rich glossy leaves with a special twist. Long stems place hundreds of flowers high above the foliage about the first of March. Take a moment and enjoy this prolific array!

Another neat little Begonia that adds so much texture is Bridal Veil. Combine this one with other great shade lovers into year-round compositions that are stunning outside in summer and inside from November through April. Bridal Veil has bronze velvet trailing foliage with delicate white flowers. ridal Veil

Other interesting and outstanding varieties among the many choices in this winter flowering category are:

River Nile; bright chartreuse with bronze edges & lovely pink stems.

Crackling Rose; rich maroon underside of crisp forest-green leaves accented with soft pink spots. This variety is a great upright foliage plant. It is admired not for the flowers but for the bold foliage

Edinburgh; has perfect angel wings that arch out as if in flight.

In the Summer Flowering Begonias the foliage and flower performance is key - these varieties are more of the cane types.

Look for Mandarin Orange, tropical flower color contrasted with almost black leaves; or Dancing Girl, a bold upright.

An all time favorite is Pink Flamingo with its bright pink flower clusters - ideal for hanging baskets since it is best viewed from below!

New this year is Snow Capped. Its leaves look as if they have been in a snow shower, beautifully contrasting with the lovely red blooms.

The Rex Begonias have spectacular foliage with hundreds of varieties that offer great contrast and changing colors. They grow well individually or in combination pots and baskets often going dormant in the fall.
